The Park, covering an area of 24,000 hectares and of an alluvial nature, was created in 1979. Throughout the years the territory was subject to several land reclamation and reorganisation activities carried out by important hamlets: Medici, Lorena, Borbone, Salviati and Savoia.
The territory is currently divided up into 7 areas: Borbone Estate, Padule di Massaciuccoli (North and South), Migliarino Estate, San Rossore Estate, Tombolo and Coltano Estate. It also includes the Massaciuccoli Lake, the mouth of the rivers Arno and Serchio and the Navicelli canal that forms its Southern border.
The Park offers numerous and diversified activities: nature excursions (on foot, by bike or tandem, with wheel-coaches or electrical cars, on horseback, or by train); teaching-recreational and also historical-architectural excursions for school groups. And still: the possibility of tasting typical quality products cultivated in the Park, mini boat excursions on the Massaciuccoli lake and on the Arno river. Nature and culture have never been closer.
