The National Museum is settled in the old San Matteo Benedictine convent from 1949, attached to the homonymous eleventh-century church which overlooks the river Arno.
The first works were gathered by the canonical Sebastiano Zucchetti, who donated them to the Opera del Duomo museum in 1796; during the years the original nucleus was enlarged thanks to several bequests, donations and purchases. Nowadays the collection is still increasing.
The museum gathers a wide collection of medieval ceramics coming from the Mediterranean Islamic countries and from the area of Pisa, where the ceramics production is quoted by the 13th Century.
Furthermore there are some sections dedicated to paintings and sculptures dated back from the 12th to the 14th Century, where works of great artists can be admired such as the ones of Ghirlandaio, Giunta Pisano, Beato Angelico, Benozzo Gozzoli, Masaccio, Gentile da Fabriano e Donatello.
In the Museum a Didactic Section is also working.
